Maureen WillsonWhen I read a statement made by any business - I always apply what I call ‘the so what factor’ – in other words if I have to read something twice and have not understood the message that you (the business) is trying to give me – you have wasted your marketing time and therefore money.

The Human attention span is short! And we operate in a world that throws thousands of messages at us a day statistic

That’s not to say that getting someone to read a statement, headline or sentence more than once is wrong – sometimes it can be intentional – but rarely – generally speaking the message or the what’s in it for me’? is lost in the everyday jargon that we use when we are close to our businesses or simply because the timing or targeting is wrong.

Try it and see – next time you see an ad on TV or read an advertisement in a magazine and then say so what. If you have totally understood what the message is asking you to do – then it has worked and money spent on marketing has been worthwhile. If you are left bemused or feel that the message is totally irrelevant to you – then the targeting is wrong. Or simply the timing.
